Embracing a New Land and Family Reunion.

Our excitement for our South African adventure reached its peak as the plane descended upon Johannesburg. With cousins Pedro and Marisa right beside me, the trip took on a wonderfully familial feel.Our hearts brimmed with joy upon the warm welcome from Uncle John and Aunt Anita, who went above and beyond with a remarkable 5-hour car ride to pick us up. The familial embrace, set against the backdrop of a new country, crafted a special moment, laying the foundation for an unforgettable experience. In this enchanting amalgamation of family bonds and exploration, the commencement of our journey not only pledged to unveil South Africa’s wonders but also committed to deepening our connections in this unfamiliar territory.

Exploring Johannesburg.

Embarking on our exploration of Johannesburg, we found ourselves in a city of captivating contrasts. The skyline, adorned with tall buildings that seemed to touch the sky. It painted a portrait of a modern metropolis thriving in the heart of South Africa. As we ventured beyond the glittering facades, the neglected streets below whispered tales of profound historical struggles.

The city of Johannesburg, like an intricately woven tapestry, bore witness to the echoes of its apartheid-era. A tumultuous chapter that shaped the very fabric of Johannesburg’s identity. A guided tour by my family became our compass through time, unveiling the city’s intricate layers and skillfully navigating us through the vestiges of apartheid. The tour narrated stories of resilience, activism, and the indomitable human spirit that persevered against adversity.

Meeting the lions
First night in South Africa

As the sun dipped below the horizon on our first night in Vrede. The ranch style house was adorned with thatched roof and a fireplace. We were hungry from a long day of travelling and therefor our priority was getting dinner ready. Uncle John lit the fireplace and we had our first Braai, the South African word for barbeque, and with it had some wonderful South African wine. The air was tinged with the scent of dinner cooking, creating an ambiance that resonated with warmth and tranquility with family.

Enveloped in the morning sun, we delved into a enchanting lion cub encounter, surpassing the ordinary and dwelling in a suspended moment. Their playful antics crafted a portrait of untamed beauty, and the ranch, more than a haven, emerged as a sanctuary blending the wild and cultivated.

A sumptuous breakfast, served amidst the tranquil landscape of the ranch, became a fortifying prelude to the adventures that awaited us. The combination of hearty fare and the serenity of the surroundings with the lions created a perfect symphony, setting the tone for the explorations and discoveries that lay ahead. Morgenzon with its blend of rustic elegance and natural wonders, etched an indelible chapter in our South African odyssey.

Winterton’s Lunch Stop at the Pig and Plough Restaurant.

Our journey towards Dundee led us through Winterton, where we stumbled upon Pig and Plough. This culinary restaurant served me the spiciest yet most delectable curry, while the family had various other dishes. A gastronomic delight that added a spicy twist to my South African culinary adventure.

Quad Biking in Drakensberg.

Immersed in the breathtaking landscapes of Drakensberg, our adventure took a thrilling turn at the Nest Hotel. There we embraced the exhilaration of quad biking. With our guide, we embarked on a journey that seamlessly blended adrenaline-pumping excitement with the serene beauty of the natural surroundings. The quad bikes roared to life, carrying us across diverse topography that revealed the true essence of the region.

Navigating the rugged terrain, the guided tour transformed into a sensory symphony, unveiling Drakensberg’s dynamic beauty with every twist and turn. Majestic mountains and expansive valleys revealed themselves. The blend of exhilarating speed and nature’s tranquil embrace created a perfect harmony, imprinting lasting memories beyond the adventure’s conclusion.

Drakensberg, with its diverse topography, became more than a backdrop; it became a dynamic canvas for our quad biking escapade. The Nest Hotel not only served as a base for this adrenaline-fueled experience but also as a portal to the untamed beauty of South Africa. It left us with a profound appreciation for the region’s natural wonders and a sense of adventure that would echo in our memories.

Africamps Boutique Camping

Embarking on a quest for distinctive accommodations, we discovered the hidden jewel of Africamps Boutique Camping in Champagne Valley. Tucked away amidst nature, this boutique camping experience redefined luxury. As we approached our campsite, the canvas tents revealed a harmonious coexistence with the surrounding landscape. The allure of Africamps lay not only in its contemporary design but in its commitment to preserving the raw beauty of the outdoors.

The pièce de résistance of our stay was undoubtedly the wood-burning hot tub, an oasis of relaxation overlooking breathtaking vistas. As the warmth enveloped us, we found ourselves immersed in a serene retreat, connecting intimately with the South African landscape. The hot water provided a sanctuary to unwind, while the surrounding scenery painted a canvas of tranquility.

Africamps in Champagne Valley transcended the boundaries of traditional camping, offering an experience that celebrated both luxury and nature. Each moment spent in this idyllic haven was a testament to the symbiotic relationship between opulence and the untamed. This leaving an indelible mark on our journey through the diverse landscapes of South Africa.

Falcon Brid

In the beauty of Falcon Bridge, nature unveiled itself as a sanctuary for birds of prey, weaving a narrative of resilience and conservation. Despite the disappointment of a weather-induced cancellation, the spirit of the sanctuary remained alive and well. With the flutter of wings and piercing gazes of eagles, vultures and owls. Each feathered resident, though unable to grace us with an aerial spectacle, bore testimony to the delicate equilibrium of South Africa’s avian biodiversity.

Falcon Bridge, a haven for injured birds of prey, became a sanctuary not only for the birds but also for our understanding of the intricate dance between nature and humanity. The experience, tinged with a touch of melancholy, fostered a deep appreciation for the tireless efforts dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating these magnificent creatures. The silent presence of vultures and owls served as a poignant reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation. Leaving us with a sense of responsibility to ensure the continued coexistence of humans and the remarkable avian species that enrich South Africa’s natural heritage.

Dundee: A City Steeped in History


Dundee, relatively small city is nestled in the expanse of the KwaZulu-Natal province. It reveals itself as a city steeped in the intricate threads of history, a historical tapestry woven with the tales of the coal wars. This city played a pivotal role in a series of conflicts that centered around the extraction and control of valuable coal resources. Spanning the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, these coal wars were marked by clashes between formidable forces—the British Empire, Boer settlers, and Zulu warriors.

The battles for supremacy over the coal-rich region gained heightened significance during the Anglo-Boer War. A conflict of great significance that unfolded at the turn of the 20th century. Dundee, with its strategic location and abundance of valuable resources, became a focal point of this conflict. With far-reaching implications for both military and economic interests. The struggle for control over the coal resources in this region underscored the intricate interplay of power. Dynamics, economic imperatives, and the clash of diverse cultures that characterized South Africa during this pivotal period.

As we tread upon the soil of Dundee, its historical resonance becomes palpable, and the city’s past emerges. Khaya4u and Kwakunje Guesthouses.


Khaya4u is nestled in the heart of Dundee, our accommodations transcended the conventional. They became gateways to unique and enriching experiences. Khaya4u Guesthouse, a beacon of comfort and charm, welcomed us with open arms. Stepping into this haven, we were immediately embraced by the warmth of its atmosphere, a perfect blend of comfort and historical allure.

The guesthouse’s beautiful antique furniture spoke of a bygone era, creating an ambiance of timeless elegance that permeated every corner. The attention to detail was evident in every carefully chosen piece, each telling a story of the past. It was not merely a place to rest our heads but an experience of comfort.

Khaya4ut was a journey through history, where every creak of the floorboards whispered tales of bygone days. The Guesthouse stood not only as a shelter but as a living testament to the rich tapestry of Dundee’s heritage. It offered us not just a room but an immersive experience in the pages of history. 


Kwakunje Guest Lodge stands as a captivating embodiment of traditional Zulu hospitality. A beacon of authenticity, this lodge offers a one-of-a-kind experience for those seeking immersion in the rich cultural tapestry of South Africa. With its distinctive thatched roofs and low entryways, the lodge mirrors the architectural charm of a traditional Zulu village.

Step inside, and you’re welcomed by a mesmerizing blend of tradition and modern comfort. The interior, adorned with meticulous attention to detail, unveils a captivating narrative of Zulu heritage. Completely renovated bathrooms seamlessly integrate contemporary amenities. it provides a harmonious balance between past and present. Kwakunje invites guests to savor the flavors of Zulu cuisine, offering food upon request, a culinary journey that further deepens the cultural encounter.

The lodge’s beautiful gardens provide a tranquil retreat, accompanied by the rhythmic melodies of weaver birds crafting their unique nests above. With its authentic ambiance and thoughtful modern touches, ensures that every moment is not just a stay but a cultural immersion to be cherished.

St. Lucia Town: Sushi with a View.

Nestled in the vibrant embrace of St. Lucia Town, our stay at the Bridge Hotel was nothing short of enchanting. A beach-themed townhouse, it offered a perfect blend of coastal charm and modern comfort. However, what truly set St. Lucia apart was its unexpected and thrilling encounters with local wildlife. Warning signs of hippos casually strolling the streets became a constant reminder of the unique coexistence between nature and urban life.

The excitement of St. Lucia reached its peak during a memorable evening at John Dorys restaurant. We indulged in a sushi dinner and as we savored each bite, our attention was drawn to an extraordinary spectacle outside. The unmistakable silhouette of hippos leisurely strolling down the hotel driveway. The juxtaposition of refined dining and the untamed beauty of hippos on the streets created an unforgettable moment. That is forever etched in our memories as a symbol of the remarkable surprises that South Africa has to offer.

Isimangaliso Wetland Park.

We Ventured into the UNESCO World Heritage site, Isimangaliso Wetland Park, was an exploration fraught with both awe and caution. The air was thick with the whispers of nature, and warnings of the park’s diverse inhabitants. The signs cautioning of hippos, crocodiles, and snakes, resonated through the air. The landscape, though teeming with the beauty of wetlands, lakes, and estuaries, held a subtle reminder of the untamed wild that coexists within its boundaries.

Every step became a dance between reverence for the natural world and a heightened awareness of the potential encounters with these formidable creatures. The signs served not only as cautions but as a testament to the park’s commitment to preserving the delicate balance of its ecosystem. Isimangaliso, with its vibrant biodiversity and cautionary serenades, unfolded as a sanctuary where the raw beauty of South Africa’s wilderness coexists. Keeping in mind the necessity for respectful exploration.

Cape Vidal Beach

An untouched haven along the eastern coast of South Africa, unfolded before us as a pristine expanse of natural beauty. The golden sands stretched for miles, meeting the azure waters of the Indian Ocean in a mesmerizing union. As we stood on the shoreline, the tranquility of the beach hinted at its summertime allure. The sun-kissed shores come alive with the laughter and joy of beachgoers, empty as I visited as we were only in early Spring.

The allure of warm, inviting waters and the refreshing sea breeze hints at the multitude of beachgoers. In summer’s peak, the beach evolves into a sought-after destination, attracting crowds eager to immerse themselves in the rejuvenating ocean embrace. Unspoiled and captivating, the beach serves as a testament to South Africa’s coastal treasures, where nature’s beauty invites all to experience the magic of the seaside.

Bayete Zulu Lodges and Elephant Connections.

Off the N2 National road, the journey led us to the extraordinary Bayete Zulu Lodges and Elephant Connections. An enchanting rendezvous with the majestic creatures of the wild. As we entered the realm of Bayete Zulu Elephant Sanctuary, the anticipation maxed out at the thought of encountering elephants like Rambo the gentle giant. It heightened our senses when moment arrived as we found ourselves face-to-face with Rambo, an awe-inspiring and surreal experience.

The chance to feed, touch, and even share a heartfelt hug with this magnificent creature left us touched. In a profound connection to the beauty and intelligence of South Africa’s wildlife. The encounter, accompanied by the unexpected touch of elephant saliva as we reached in it’s mouth to place food. This became an indelible memory, a testament to the magic that unfolds when humanity and nature coexist.

Thokozizwe Hunting Camp and game park

The adventure continued with a visit to the Thokozizwe Hunting Camp, offering a blend of adrenaline and history. Here, we embraced the thrill of target shooting, immersing ourselves in the skills and traditions of the region. The journey took an unexpected turn as we embarked on a memorable truck ride through the scenic countryside near Wasbank. The vast landscapes, dotted with cows and their small calves, showcased the breathtaking beauty of South Africa’s countryside. The camp offered a blend of adventure and history, enriching our understanding of the land’s diverse heritage.

Talana Museum

Our exploration of Dundee reached a profound juncture at the Talana Museum, a repository of historical treasures that enriched our understanding of the region’s intricate past. This museum, served as a cultural compass, guiding us through the annals of time. Timeless in a remarkable collection of artifacts and stories that spanned centuries.

As we traversed the halls of the Talana Museum, each exhibit became a chapter, unraveling the tapestry of Dundee’s history. The artifacts, ranged from ancient relics to more recent mementos. It offered a tangible connection to the diverse cultural and historical influences that have shaped the region. The stories echoed through the museum’s corridors, revealing the triumphs, challenges, and pivotal moments that define Dundee’s identity.

Potjies Kos and Homely Delights


Back in Dundee, our journey took a heartwarming turn as we experienced the warmth of family through a one-of-a-kind Potjies Kos feast. This culinary celebration, cooked in traditional cast iron pots. It transcended the realm of food to symbolize love, tradition, and the joyous spirit of homecoming. As the aroma of the feast wafted through the air, it became a sensory testament to the rich tapestry of South African familial bonds.

The Potjies Kos, prepared with meticulous care and seasoned with local foods, embodied the essence of togetherness. Each ingredient added to the pot seemed to carry not just flavors but stories of shared laughter. Shared and cherished memories, and the unbroken thread of family ties. The sizzling pots became cauldrons of connection, blending ingredients and generations into a savory masterpiece that reflected the heart and soul of South African culture.

Gathered around the communal feast, we didn’t just savor the delectable flavors; we embraced the essence of family. The embodiment of home, and the echoes of a shared heritage. The Potjies Kos feast in Dundee became more than a meal; it became a living tradition. It left us with a taste that lingered not just on our palates but in the cherished memories of a familial reunion in the heart of South Africa.
